Milanese architecture of the 20th century represents a unique case of how modernity can be reinvented through continuity with previous culture, with one eye looking to the future and the other to history. Morphological memory of preexisting structures, analogy with historical precedents, contextual adaptation, controlled and non-revolutionary modernity—these are the characteristics of Milanese modernity. It successfully merges two dimensions of intervention: the restoration of the existing and the design of the new in continuity with what already exists.
