The new cultural center in Milan for Instituto Cervantes repurposes historical Baroque spaces for modern use for the first time. Under the Sant’Alessandro church, a series of Baroque spaces with columns and elaborately domed ceilings are now occupied by a carefully curated collection of new objects. Challenges include preserving heritage while adaptively reusing existing spaces. Using blue-gray MDF, the design creates adaptable furniture for a library, exhibition space, and event room. The project aims to activate the complex, fostering community interactions.
